I sometimes see posts and videos with topics similar to "What my pet would read", What books your pet would like you to read" and "Petworld is gushing about this book". So I thought I should make a top 5 books from Chester's point of view. (Disclaimer: These are all made up books.)
I will also add my top 5 books to read as a dog owner! :)
First one on Chester's list is a book about Cheese, and what better to describe his obsession than "Cheese, the food of gods by Mozz R. Ella". In this book you'll learn how to teach your human how to pay the cheese tax, how to properly inspect the quality and the subtle art of using your puppy eyes to guilt trip your human to give you extra cheese.
The second book is called "How to destroy all your toys and still get new ones by Doctor Woofie Goldberg".
This book will reveal 5 different ways to unravel a plushie your human got for you and as a added bonus few tips on how to do the unraveling as fast as possible.
"Leaving your mark by Baron von Floofenhund" is third on the list and will teach you how to best keep your "message" short but informative. It will also tell you how to one up your four legged neighbour, with those big cherries, who keeps marking your favourite tree.
Fourth book "When your pawrent is not really your pawrent by Mary Puppins" gives you coping strategies when you've realised that your pawrent is actually a human who paid a lot of money and pupnapped you from your real family. How to learn to love this new family dynamic.
Fifth, last but not least, is a horror book called "The bathtime by Arthur Canine Doyle". This book follows a little pup called Spot and how after a fun day at the beach everything changed. The day took a dark turn after everyone got home and the human started preparing the shower area. The horrors of soap going everywhere and the showerhead moving like a snake, the owner got rid of all the sand little Spot had hidden in his fur. The nightmare didn't end there, the last torture device was something the human called "hairdryer".
Now to my book recommendations, and yes these are actually real books 😋 They are both books I've read and I've seen recommended by dogtrainers.
Disclaimer: These books cover only positive reinforcement training. In today's day and age there are no place for trainers (*cough* Cesar Milan *cough*) who use fear and punishment as training methods or promise to help your dog with "fast and effective trick". If a trainer tells you to use electric shock collar, run.
"Doggie Language by Lili Chin" Is a must have for anyone who wants to learn more about their furry children. She has also written book about cats as well and they've been translated to many different languages. Learning what your dog is trying to tell you is really important to make your trust and relationship better.
"The Forever Dog by Rodney Habib and Doctor Karen Shaw Becker" This book has been on my list for a really long time and I've heard good things about it. It gives you guidance to keep your pet healthy longer, it focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, enviromental exposures and stress reduction.
"What It's Like to Be a Dog by Gregory Berns" With his "Dog Project" they were able to train over 80 dogs to sit still for an awake MRI to study how their brains work. As the project went on, on few of the dogs they found early onset cancer and were able to start treatment in good time. So fascinating!!! 🤩
"On Talking Terms with Dogs by Turid Rugaas" Turid Rugaas is Norwegian dog trainer who has made her life work to study canine social interaction. This books goes more indepth about dog language than Doggie Language, it will teach you to read your dogs yawning, lip-licking and sneezing as signals and better communicate with your dog. Yes sometimes yawn is just a yawn which is why it's important to understand dog's whole body language.
This is is aimed for dog owners who have a reactive dog or anyone working with dogs that are reactive. It will give you tools to rehabilitate aggression, frustration and fear. BAT training builds resilience and self-reliance by giving dogs safe opportunities to learn about people, dogs or other "triggers".
As an extra, everyone needs to read
